A business trip has one job: to get you to the meeting composed, prepared and looking as though you came from across the street, not across the country. The right setup makes that almost automatic. The suit arrives pressed, the laptop is charged, and the pen is in your inside pocket.

Here is how we think about it, piece by piece.

Keeping tailoring in shape

Suits and dresses travel best when they hang, or when they are folded around as few creases as possible. A garment bag is the simplest answer.

The TUMI Garment Bag is a light, foldable nylon carrier. It has quick-release side clips and an Add-a-Bag sleeve so it rides on top of a roller. The TUMI Alpha Tri-Fold Garment Bag is ballistic nylon with buckle closures, an integrated hanging hook and a removable shoulder strap.

If you would rather roll your wardrobe, the TUMI Alpha Garment Carry-On combines a hanging section and a hook with a 5-stage telescoping handle in a carry-on footprint. For longer engagements or black-tie travel, the TUMI Large Garment Checked rolls on four dual outboard wheels. The Briggs & Riley Baseline Deluxe Wardrobe Spinner holds 103 liters with the brand's flat, ridge-free Outsider® interior.

Backpack or brief?

The answer depends less on style than on how you move. Ask yourself what you actually carry, how far you walk, and where the bag needs to look right.

“The "best" TUMI backpack isn't a model. It's the one that fits the life you actually live.”

Demian Wendrow, owner

If you carry a lot and want structure, the TUMI Alpha Brief Pack is a brief that wears like a backpack. It holds 25 L, has a padded compartment for a 15" PC or 16" MacBook, two front U-zip pockets and a water-resistant bottle pocket. The Alpha Medium 15" Expandable Backpack is slimmer at 16 L, with a magnetic zip garage.

If you commute and fly in the same week, the Alpha Bravo line is built for movement. The Alpha Bravo Search has a padded mesh back panel and daisy chains compatible with TUMI+ accessories. The Alpha Bravo Leather Search turns the same design into leather for a more polished room. The Alpha Bravo Dynamic is the lightest of the three at 2.4 lb. The TUMI Voyageur Montana is softer in feel, holds 20 L and has a leather top handle and 2.25" of zip-around expansion.

If you want to slide onto a roller handle, Briggs & Riley builds a pass-through panel into many of its work bags. The @Work Medium Widemouth Backpack (19 L) and @Work Medium Cargo Backpack (23.3 L) both have a front magnetic pocket and a discreet top pocket for your phone. The Rhapsody Medium Backpack is a more refined version in micro-weave nylon with full-grain leather accents.

The convertibles do two jobs. The ZDX Medium Convertible Backpack and Baseline Medium Convertible Backpack have hideaway straps and a SpeedThru™ pocket that makes checkpoints quicker.

If a brief is non-negotiable, the Briggs & Riley @Work Large Expandable Brief expands by 2" and slips over a luggage handle.

A tote that means business

Not every work bag needs straps on the back. TUMI's Voyageur Large Valetta Tote fits a 15" PC or 16" MacBook. It has leather shoulder straps, a removable webbing strap for longer carries and a monogrammable leather charm.

The Voyageur Q Tote is lighter at 1.0 lb, with leather straps and feet and an Add-a-Bag strap that keeps it on top of your carry-on. MZ Wallace's Medium Daily Tote also takes a 15" laptop. You will find it in our guide to handbags and small leather goods.

Protecting and organizing your tech

A laptop sleeve inside a bag protects your laptop, and it lets you carry the laptop on its own into a meeting.

The TUMI Large 15" Laptop Cover and Medium 13" Laptop Cover are ballistic nylon with a front U-zip pocket and an Add-a-Bag strap. MZ Wallace's Tech Sleeve Deluxe fits laptops up to 14" and has three exterior pockets. It comes in Navy and a bright Red Apple that is easy to spot in a security bin.

Cables and chargers drift to the bottom of every bag unless they have a home. Orbitkey's 2-in-1 Tech Accessory Pouch stands on its own, has a collapsible divider and an external pocket with a cable pass-through. Its inner section detaches as a separate Desk Pouch, which is also sold on its own.

The hotel desk, made yours

Some of the best business tools are analog. A leather writing pad cover on the conference table says you came prepared. Bosca's Writing Pad Cover in Dolce and Old Leather hold a standard 8½ × 11 in pad in hand-stained Italian leather.

For notes you will keep, the Graphic Image Leather Refillable 7″ Journal and 9" Journal use refillable spiral inserts of gilded, perforated paper inside full-grain calfskin.

And a good pen is still worth carrying. The Waterman Hemisphere Rollerball is slim, with 23-karat gold-plated trim. The Waterman Expert is broader and executive in feel, with palladium trim. Both are made in France.

The night-before checklist

  • Suit hung, shirts buttoned, shoes in their bags.
  • Laptop, phone and headphones charged; charger and adapter in the tech pouch.
  • Documents, notes and a pen in the pad cover.
  • Passport or ID, boarding pass and loyalty cards in one place.
  • One outfit for the unexpected dinner.

A well-organized work bag does not just carry things. It means you never have to think about what you carry.

Questions travelers ask

How do I pack a suit so it doesn't wrinkle?

Hang it in a garment bag if you can. If you must fold, turn the shoulders inward, fold once at the waist and lay it on top of your clothes. Hang it in a steamy bathroom on arrival to release creases.

Is a backpack or a briefcase better for business travel?

It depends on how you move. Backpacks are easier through airports and on transit. Briefs look more formal in meetings. Brief-packs and convertible bags do both, and many slide over a luggage handle.

What laptop size fits in a typical work backpack?

Many work backpacks fit up to a 15" PC or 16" MacBook. Always check the laptop compartment dimensions against your own machine.

How should I organize chargers and cables when traveling?

Use one dedicated tech pouch with a single multi-port charger, one cable per device type and a universal adapter. Keep it at the top of your bag for security and quick access.

Can I bring a power bank on a business trip?

Yes, in your carry-on. Spare lithium batteries and power banks are not allowed in checked luggage.
