One Bag, One Week: The Quiet Art of Carry-On Travel
A carry-on and a well-chosen personal item will get you through most trips. Here is how to choose the pair and pack them well.

There is a particular kind of freedom in walking past the baggage carousel. Carry-on travel is not about deprivation. It is about editing: bringing only what you will wear, and keeping everything you need within arm's reach from the curb to the hotel room.
A week is the natural limit for most people. Beyond that it becomes a question of laundry, not luggage. Two pieces do the work: a carry-on for the overhead bin and a personal item for under the seat in front of you. Choose them as a pair.
Choosing the carry-on
The first rule is unglamorous: measure against your airline. Many U.S. airlines publish a carry-on limit of around 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including wheels and handles. Some international and regional carriers are smaller, and some also limit weight. Check every airline on your itinerary, not only the first one.
The TUMI 19 Degree International Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry On measures 21.7 × 14 × 9.1 in and holds 38–48 L. It has a built-in USB-C charging port and an integrated TSA lock, which are useful features in a long security line.
The Briggs & Riley Sympatico Essential 22" Front Pocket Carry-On offers 44–55 L. It has a zippered front pocket for a jacket or a tablet, and Briggs & Riley describes it as meeting carry-on regulations for most U.S. domestic and international airlines. It is backed by the brand's lifetime guarantee.
“Time to actually open a bag, feel the weight, roll it across the floor, ask why one carry-on is $200 more than the one next to it, and get a real answer, not a rehearsed one.”

Or skip the wheels entirely
For short trips, a well-made duffel or weekender is often more versatile than a roller. It squeezes into tighter overhead bins, sits easily in the back seat of a car, and looks right walking into a country inn.
The TUMI Voyageur Rhys Expandable Duffel weighs 1.9 lb and expands up to 4". The TUMI Alpha Double Expandable Duffel is ballistic nylon, with a removable padded shoulder strap and a quick-access phone pocket.
MZ Wallace takes a softer approach. The Jim Overnight Duffel holds about 38 L and has a sleeve for a laptop up to 16". The smaller Nik Duffel has nine interior and seven exterior pockets in a lighter 2.1 lb build. For gym-to-getaway weekends, the Metro Team Duffel adds three detachable pouches and room for a 17" laptop.

If you like the freedom of a backpack, Eagle Creek's Tour Travel Pack 40L expands from 40 to 44 L. It has lockable zippers, a discreet passport pocket and a weatherproof front compartment. It is built for travelers who move through cobblestones and train stations more than airport lounges.
The personal item does more than you think
The under-seat bag is where carry-on travel succeeds or fails. It holds everything you will want during the flight: passport, phone, headphones, medication, a sweater, a book and a snack. It is also the bag you will carry all day once you arrive.
Structured totes are the classic choice. MZ Wallace's Large Metro Travel Tote holds about 38 L, with nine exterior pockets and three detachable pouches. The Medium Metro Travel Tote (also in Juniper) brings that organization down to about 23 L and still takes a 15" laptop. The Large Metro Tote Deluxe, also in Juniper, is a lighter alternative at 2.0 lb.
Many travelers prefer two free hands. The MZ Wallace Metro Backpack weighs just 1.3 lb, fits a 15" laptop and comes in Raisin and Agave Green. The Metro Utility Backpack is for the over-organized, with ten interior pockets and eight exterior ones.
“Plenty of bags look beautiful on a shelf. Very few still look beautiful after a year of train platforms, airport security bins, and coffee-in-one-hand mornings.”

How to pack a week into one bag
- Plan outfits around two or three colors. If everything works with everything, five tops and three bottoms make more than a week of looks.
- Wear the bulkiest things on the plane. Your heaviest shoes, your jacket and your warmest layer should travel on you, not in the bag.
- Use pouches to compress and sort. Orbitkey's Essential Pouch Trio comes in three sizes, with easy-grab handles and an adjustable divider. Use one for cables, one for small toiletries and one for socks and underwear.
- Pack one bag inside another. The TUMI Just in Case Tote weighs 0.9 lb and packs into its own pouch. Unfold it for a market run, a beach afternoon or the souvenirs on the way home.
- Bring a laundry plan. A small bottle of travel wash and a sink will reset a carry-on wardrobe midweek.

Liquids, gadgets and the security line
U.S. departures follow the TSA's 3-1-1 rule for carry-on liquids. Containers must be 3.4 oz (100 mL) or less, they must all fit in one quart-size bag, and each passenger gets one bag. Keep that bag at the top of your carry-on, or in an outside pocket, so it comes out in one motion.
Put your laptop and tablet where you can slide them out easily. Wear shoes that are easy to take off. Keep spare batteries and power banks in the cabin, which is where they are required to travel anyway.
A carry-on trip ends the way it began, calmly. There is no carousel and no claim ticket. You simply walk out to the curb with everything you need.
Questions travelers ask
What size is a carry-on bag?
Many U.S. airlines publish a carry-on limit of about 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including wheels and handles. International and regional carriers are often smaller and some limit weight, so check each airline on your itinerary.
Can you really travel for a week with only a carry-on?
Yes. Plan outfits around a few colors, wear your bulkiest items on the plane, use pouches to compress and sort, and plan one quick sink laundry midweek.
What is the best personal item for a flight?
A structured tote or a backpack that fits under the seat and holds a laptop, documents, medication and a layer. Choose one with plenty of pockets so essentials stay easy to reach.
What is the TSA liquids rule for carry-on bags?
On U.S. departures, liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on bags must be in containers of 3.4 oz (100 mL) or less, all fitting in one quart-size bag per passenger.
Is a duffel or a wheeled carry-on better?
A wheeled carry-on is easier through large airports. A duffel is lighter, more flexible in tight overhead bins and car trunks, and works well for weekends and road trips.
